The precise origins of the modern day Collie are not known. What is known that as far back as the 18th century the Collie was used in the Scottish highlands as a well-trained and highly adept sheepdog. In fact, the Collie was carefully bred to ensure the safe herding and guarding of a flock of sheep. Formed all the way back on Aug. 26, 1886, the Collie Club of America is one of the oldest clubs of its type that is still in existence today. According to the Collie Club of America, their original goal was “the encouragement and improvement of the breed of Collies.” It was from this club that came the very first official standard for the Collie breed.
Dedicated to promoting and maintaining the working ability of the Collie breed, the American Working Collie Association, or AWCA, has a variety of programs. The American Working Collie Association has a versatility program with the goal of promoting the versatility of the Collie breed and offers various working titles for these dogs. Most of all, the American Working Collie Association is dedicated to helping promote the Collie breed and care for these special dogs.
